Vision Zero starts from a simple premise: traffic deaths are not accidents and not an acceptable cost of getting around. They are the predictable result of how we design streets — and design can change.
People will always make mistakes. A safe system is designed so that when they do, those mistakes do not cost someone their life.
Speed is one of the strongest factors in whether someone survives a crash. While speed is not the only variable, designing streets that encourage slower travel is one of the most direct ways we can protect the people using them.
In most cities, a small share of streets carries the majority of severe crashes. Understanding where those streets are allows agencies to direct limited resources toward the places where they will do the most good.
If you are considering moving somewhere new, this is worth a look. Most cities with a Vision Zero commitment publish their crash data publicly, and how a city reports on safety says a great deal about whether it is investing in it. Search for yours below; it is one of the clearest windows into a city's priorities that residents have access to.
ATLDOT compiles fatalities monthly from police, the medical examiner, and hospitals — not police reports alone. Filterable by injury, mode, location, and road ownership. 59 people died in 2024, down from a peak of 101 in 2021.
Open dashboard →Vision Zero View maps every injury and fatality to the nearest intersection, updated monthly, going back to 2014. New York recorded 205 traffic deaths in 2025 — the fewest since record-keeping began in 1910.
